NOSTALGIA TIME Tuesday, July 11th, 2017
June, 2017 was definitely “nostalgia month” for the old guy here. You saw how many blog entries I devoted to The Pin Shoot, the reincarnation of the iconic handgun/rifle/shotgun match Richard Davis founded more than 40 years ago. For about two dozen years, that match was the one vacation I guaranteed myself annually, and nineteen years later going back to it was like a high school reunion. Hell, I’m still buzzed over it. However, my “nostalgia month” had begun earlier in June, when I taught a MAG-20 (Armed Citizens Rules of Engagement) class at the great old Wilson Hill Pistol Club in Manchester, NH. Back in the ‘60s, I was nineteen years old when my friend Nolan Santy took me there to give traditional bulls-eye pistol shooting a try. My only suitable gun at the time was a pre-WWII Colt Match Target Woodsman .22, and on the first try I managed to score a 263 out of 300 possible points…and was promptly hooked. Earlier in my teens I had shot informal competition at the “turkey shoots” held by local sportsmen’s clubs around the Granite State where I grew up, but formal competition was a new high. I’ve been doing it in one form or another ever since, though I had gotten into the more practical “combat shooting” games by my mid-twenties. The club was much the same as I remembered it, which in turn is much the same as it was when Wilson Hill was founded in 1935 and has become something of an icon among traditional shooters. For many years, the club hosted the annual NH State Gallery Pistol (.22 caliber) Championship. Don Mara I learned more than I can say from some of the great shooters there: Al Payant, Fran SanSouci, Ken Howard, Stan Dzadura, and many more. Perhaps the one guy I learned the most from was a local hero, Don Mara, USMC. Don won many medals as a combat Marine in Vietnam during that period, and as a shooter, he was the guy to beat for the State Championship, which he held God knows how many years. While all the other heavy hitters were shooting expensive target pistols, Don used a $57 Ruger Mark I and kicked mucho boo-tay, proving it’s about the shooter a lot more than about the gun, the Indian more than the arrow. I got to meet Don again in June, after almost 40 years. He retired from the Corps as a Sergeant-Major, and is still globe and anchor through and through. And he still, at about 78, mentors new shooters. He’s the kind of person who makes you proud to be part of the gun culture.
Under training director Al MacArthur Jr, Wilson Hill has become a local hub of firearms safety and self-defense training. It was great to see this iconic gun club keeping up with the times without losing its sense of tradition. Even if it did make me feel kinda old…
Here is the article, written about Law Day that will be published in the July, 2014 issue of Hawkeye News
“New Hampshire’s “Firearm’s Law Day”
Jeff Batula
Hoyt/Easton Pro-Staff
With handgun, assault rifle and firearm sales in New Hampshire breaking all-time records over the past several years, thousands of New Hampshire residents have proudly joined the ranks as a legal firearm owner in the Granite State. Firearm’s are being bought at record breaking levels for a multitude of reasons; Hunting, personal protection, target shooting, and concerns over government shutdown of specific firearm types. No matter what the reason for purchasing a new firearm, there is a growing concern within the legal as well as the firearm training community that the majority of new and existing legal gun owners do not possess the proper level of knowledge from a legality perspective, as it pertains to all aspects of firearm ownership.
Unfortunately, far too many law abiding citizens, with honest intentions are finding themselves dealing with serious legal issues based on a lack of proper legal firearm ownership knowledge. As I personally experienced a few months back when I was confronted at my home by intruder in the middle of the night, I quite honestly had no idea how to legally handle this situation. Like myself, there are far too many firearm owners that have based all of their legal knowledge on hearsay, or what their buddy told them, or what they read somewhere. Let’s officially set the record straight, your lack of an in depth understanding of your legal rights as a firearm owner, could very quickly find you in middle of a legal nightmare, up to and including murder charges. Your time to take a pro-active approach to firearm ownership is now. Don’t wait another second.
Based on my personal experience a few months back, and all of the comments and questions that resulted from an intruder approaching my home in the middle of the night, I can clearly see now that I was highly unprepared for this situation, and feel very lucky with regards to the outcome, even more so now, knowing how easy it would have been to have found myself in a world of legal trouble, based on what I “thought” to be my legal rights. When you are in the heat of the moment, all I can say to every law abiding citizen in New Hampshire is that you better know your legal rights, and be prepared to manage through a very emotional situation based on pro-active training and legal facts rather than “what you thought to be the law”. In too many cases, what innocent victims thought were their legal rights quickly turns into a legal nightmare, and they find themselves fighting a prison sentence based on their uninformed and illegal actions taken in the heat of the moment.
Now that I hopefully have your attention, what if I were to tell you that on the first Saturday of each month, there was a very informative three hour training class that you could take that was run by highly trained and accredited firearm instructors, as well as a very prominent New Hampshire criminal defense attorney, who will walk you step by step through every aspect of firearm law in New Hampshire as well as interstate transport law. At the end of this three hour interactive training, I can speak first hand and tell you that you will leave this training very well versed with all of the current laws pertaining to buying, selling, carrying, concealing, brandishing, interstate transport, the difference between defensive shooting vs. criminal shooting, as well as a clear understanding of your 5th amendment rights. Quite honestly the best $50.00 that I have possibly ever spent and I know you will agree upon completion of this course.
The firearm law training class is managed and run by NRA certified Trainers, Don Gorman and Al MacArthur Jr., who have years of experience training the public in all aspects of proper firearm handling. In addition to Don and Al, criminal defense attorney Seth Hipple from the law offices of Martin and Hipple located in Concord, was also in attendance, and did an outstanding job spending close to two hours educating and reviewing in detail all of the current laws pertaining to handguns and firearms, as well as an in depth explanation of the criminal mindset and the mental elements necessary to commit a criminal act.
Once the legal training was complete, Don and Al put your learning's to the test and did an outstanding job setting up interactive “what if” scenarios to challenge your knowledge on the proper handling of potentially life threatening events. It is a very dynamic process, and it challenges all in attendance to make quick decisions on whether to shoot or not, based on specific circumstances that they present to the group. This “hands on” training really helps to tie the entire firearms law training together, and will send you on your way with a very pro-active understanding of what steps you can legally take during a burglary, home invasion, car-jacking, armed robbery etc.
This monthly firearms law training is hosted by the historic Wilson Hill Pistol Club in Manchester New Hampshire on the first Saturday of each month. The Wilson Hill Pistol Club has been serving the shooting community for over 65 years, and is over 180 members strong with a strong community commitment to firearm safety and training. Located on Lake Shore Drive in Manchester, it is a very centralized location with quick and easy access for all of those interested in taking the three hours New Hampshire firearm law class, or any of the other firearms training that they offer to the general public.
In closing, I cannot stress the importance and impact of this training. Whether you have owned and handled firearms all of your life, or have just recently purchased your first firearm, I highly recommend that you contact Don, and book yourself into the next class. You will not believe how much you will learn during this very informative training.
We are very fortunate to have this training opportunity here in New Hampshire,
and I cannot personally thank Don, Al and Seth enough for their passion and commitment to make every gun owner in New Hampshire, an educated, safe and legally sound gun owner!
Contact Don Gorman at 603-463-7771, or go to Gunlessons.webs.com for more information, and to sign yourself and your entire family up for this outstanding training. As a firearms owner, it is the best three hour investment you can make!
